when does a cult film officially become a cult film, and at what point does it leave the cult film genre and enter a new mainstream genre? or is it that once it is a cult film it is a cult film forever no matter how mainstream it gets?

I am finally getting the chance to watch all of the movies i have always wanted to see. enough with this planning on doing it shenanigan. its time! oh and i am also taking a class called genres in film that assigns me this. i guess it all worked out in the end.
